I have severe depression and general anxiety disorder. I take 100mg/day of Zoloft, and that pretty well takes care of my depression, and most of my panic attacks. Occasionally, I'll take 0.25mg for a panic attack, but I'm cautious because sometimes the downside of coming off a panic attack sends me into a fit of depression. I highly recommend both Zoloft and Xanax, I just want to put the word out there to use good judgement when treating a panic attack when you have depression as well.

Xanax has been a lifesaver for me. 26 years ago I was diagnosed with panic disorder and agorophobia. The first year I too Xanax and found this helped me a great deal. I overcame this disorder for 15 years up unti this past month i had a recent bout with panic attacks after taking one pill of paxil which did not mix well with my body. I am now taking Xanax again because the Paxil scared me so bad with the side effects I had. At first I did not want to take it because it is so highly addictive but when you weigh the benefits that Xanax can provide it's worth it.

I had Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Xanax is the only drug I've found that works to alleviate the symptoms. I take .25mg no more than twice a week and within 20 minutes I feel calm and relaxed. Combine it with yoga and meditation and all your worries are gone. I like to take a .25mg pill and immediately do some yoga and meditate for 20 minutes. By the time you're done meditating you'll feel great for a couple hours. It helps just knowing the pill is there if I want it. I actually find that I take it much less than twice a week, only 1 or 2 times a month if that. I have no other side effects that I notice.
