I take 1mg XR every morning and .5mg PRN. It stops panic in its tracks and alleviates hypomanic symptoms when they break through the cocktail of drugs I take for Bipolar 2. I have been using Xanax for about ten years, but even at this small dose I have one side effect: learning and memory problems. I now take as few PRNs as possible and take alternative meds (Inderal and Dexedrine) before I attend a class or lecture. That seems to be working.

Xanax helped me through the worst times of my life - an emergency hysterectomy and the deaths of my mother, father, then brother - beginning in '99 to the present. I was up to 3 .5 mg tablets per day. I am now down to 1/2 .5 mg tablet in the morning and the same in the evening. It will take several months to adjust my body. While Xanax has been a lifesaver for me, it has been extremely hard physiologically (and a little psychologically) to withdraw from. Also, Xanax has been helpful with my insomnia and severe tension headaches.
